Received an arc from publisher via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen? As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen-all while struggling not to lose her heart. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.īut Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. I liked how everything resolved nicely and happily and optimistically at the end.Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:ģ) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself. I liked the fast pacing and strong sense of progress throughout the book. I liked the side characters and thought they added to the book. I like how well-matched the MC and her love interest were (they both filled each other’s needs, made sense together, had individual personalities and goals, etc).

I liked that there was something keeping them apart (couldn’t touch each other for magic-power reasons, reminded me of the well-paced Russian movie I Am Dragon). I liked that the romance had consent and wasn’t glorifying abuse/toxicity. I liked how the MC was clever/smart and full of plans and always trying to be a step ahead of the people around her to outmaneuver them (this part reminded me of like, the anime Code Geass, which was great). I liked that she was ambitious and had goals that weren’t romantically oriented at all, but then she accidentally finds herself falling in love anyway. Here are some things I liked about it, many of which remind me of another fabulous book, Howl’s Moving Castle: I liked the strong voice of the MC - even after just the first chapter I knew exactly who she was and what made her tick. I just finished The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller, and it was amazing! (Someone on here recommended it, so thank you, whoever that was!)
